Enjoy both worry-free backup of all of your home's PCs (including Macs) as well as easy music, video and photo streaming.

The HP LX195 includes 640 GB of internal storage and expansion using USB external hard drives via the four USB 2.0 ports.

Managing Your Digital Lifestyle

With the increasing amount of digital content that you work with on a daily basis as well as growing digital media libraries, a homer server can both share files to computers on your network as well as back up critical files from those computers. Here are just a few things that the HP LX195 MediaSmart can do for you:

Automatic Backup

  • Automatically manage daily backup, virus protection, media collection, and power management, all behind the scenes.
  • Automatically back up multiple computers, whether running Windows (via Microsoft Windows Home Server Backup) or Mac (via Apple Time Machine).
  • Store up to 168,000 photos, 147,000 songs or 405 hours of video on the installed 640 GB hard drive.
  • Get additional protection by backing up your server to an on-line back-up service like Amazon S3.

Designed for Digital Media

  • Access your media anywhere with an Internet-connected computer.
  • Stream music and photos to any computer, while you're at home or away.
  • Stream to your stereos and TVs through a gaming console like the Xbox 360 or PlayStation3.
  • Publish photos to photo-sharing and social networking Web sites--Snapfish, Flickr, Picasa, and even Facebook--via any Internet-connected computer, or share directly from your server.
  • Share music libraries for play throughout your home.

Easy Setup, Scheduling, and Support

  • Set up fast: just plug it in, connect it to your wireless router (sold separately), and load the software on your PCs and Macs.
  • Schedule the server to copy and centralize Windows PC media files and libraries (including iTunes and playlists).
  • Expand your capacity by adding external hard drives via four USB ports on the back.
  • Warranty and support: one-year limited; get help toll-free, 24 x 7, or via email in as little time as an hour.

  • PC Hard Drive Disk Backup. Once the HP MediaSmart Server software is installed on a home PC, the Windows Home Server backup software automatically starts backing up the PC's hard disk drive image every night. You can customize the number and frequency of backups kept. You can also make incremental backups, where only changes are backed up after the initial large backup.
  • Mac Backup. Back up your Macs to the MediaSmart Server using Apple's Time Machine software.

5 out of 5 stars Love it!   May 26, 2009

I bought this to replace a couple usb drives and a buffalo nas product and have been thrilled thus far. Setup was a snap and the backups for all of my PCs are happening every night... I didn't have to do a thing.
Best part of all has been the speed - light years faster than my nas product to the point that I'm now saving large files directly to the MediaSmart Server vs. on my local PC. All in all, I highly recommend if you're looking for a small, easy and fast backup and sharing "server" in your home...

5 out of 5 stars I love this server   November 29, 2009

I love this product. It has everything I need. If you are using this as a backup solution, 640g is plenty of disk space for a few computers. I have two pcs backed up and about 30g of stuff for remote access and I only used 180g so far. I can always add a usb disk (up to 4) if I need more. WHS is very smart about how it uses disk space, it only stores one copy of each file no matter how many you have saved. The remote access is great, i can upload, down load, give out login for access to certain files, remote to my workstations and control the server itself online. HP also has loads of great software loaded, adding value to the core whs os. Including McAfee av with 7mo free, Media Collector, Twonky, Photo publisher, online backup to amazon s3.

The server only uses 27 watts of power! It is plenty fast and 1g memory is all you really need. If I want more I can always upgrade.

For $199, this thing is a steal. If you are not using this thing to store tons of media, it will be perfect.

5 out of 5 stars What a great solution for a digital family   January 8, 2010

For years I've had a variety of solutions to meet a variety of needs. I run a website from home, share files among various computers, have a webcam that takes pictures for our website, and more. Now with teens we've been shuffling music and videos around, and things have been getting crazy. Not to mention keeping it all backed up.

Well, now I have an all in one solution. I back up all machines with this box, have a central location to store media, run my website/webcam on this server, and more. I love the fact that it offers up the music for iTunes, as it prevents the duplication of the music across multiple computers, etc. Great stuff! So much better than what we'd done for years, which consisted of running a NAS, running a physical or virtual web-server machine, having numerous external USB drives, and using imaging systems for backups.

5 out of 5 stars OK, this was meant for me   April 21, 2010

I needed a simple home server and I just could not justify the $400+ costs. I have simple needs for my server. I own 4 1TB USB hard storage drives that I use to move data around and so this server allows me to connect them without any hassle and I get instant expansion. I have four working computers and an XBox but I don't need a real server to connect them, just share movies, keep the restore files, and some data. I also need to remote access when I do travel and this server solves that problem also. I can remote access my main computer at home or just use the storage devices on the server. I read the problems with Windows 7 not finding this server. I was worried because I use a two router system with my main computer on the second router while the server would be on the primary. As it turns out, I had no problems with my Windows 7 computer finding the server and connecting. So, my installation was fairly smooth, even though the server took a while to update (I selected the automatic updating in the options).

AT the price of this server, it is absolutely perfect. If you think about it, a 640HD drive, the ability to attach 4 USB HD drives through a network connector, a Windows Server Operating System, and remote access makes this a winner. Even if they charge $9.99 after the first year if remote access (I understand that there is a way to bypass that), that is a small price. Now I have a cheap server that I can remote access and I can watch media all over the house through different PCs and my XBox system. So for what this server does and the price it does it at, I am extremely happy.

I do have one concern but it is more of an unknown. My guess is the price is so low because HP is ready to close this model out. As long as I can update the operating system, I should be ok, but it probably means the support from HP will phase out faster than the other HP servers. But for about $200, man I will just have fun with this as long as I can.

Update June 26, 2010 - I wanted to come back and update my report on this server. It is still working great and I still recommend it. The sharing of movie files is terrific and the server is robust. The remote access allows me to get to my computer with its dynamic IP and that works out well. I had the hardest time with port forwarding because my DSL modem did not understand the pnp commands and so I had to manually open the ports. Still that was not the fault of the server as I have that problem with all my devices connected to the modem.

But the reason I want to update my review is because there is one feature that bothers me. If you connect an external storage drive using a USB port, the server gives only one option. It will ask you if you want to increase your storage capacity and then it adds that memory to the original drive. If you say no, it ignores the drive as if it is not there. If you say yes, you cannot later remove that drive or store separate information on that drive (there is a process where it can "separate" the drive but like the Star Trek: The Next Generation, it really is cumbersome and not worth the effort). That is a problem because I was expecting to use the server to hook drives up that I can disconnect and take. I now do that through a computer but transferring several movies to an external drive takes some time. It is not a stopper, just an inconvenience.

I love this server, is very easy to set up and works very well, I have not complaints about it, you'll find options in internet to upgrade this server, such as memory and disk upgrade and a kvm connector (keyboard, video and mouse output)

Actually I used as a workstation too.

And yes, It has a double core.
